Police open homicide probe after Owono's clash kills Jesús de Miguel

Tenerife confirmed that forward Jesús de Miguel died following a brutal challenge by the Andorra goalkeeper.

The Policía Nacional de España, through its Grupo de Homicidios, has opened a reckless homicide investigation into goalkeeper Jesús Owono’s involvement.

The news shocked the global football community.

In parallel, a separate inquiry was launched focusing on Jesús Owono, the Andorra goalkeeper whose challenge triggered the cardiac arrest.

The clash occurred in the final minutes of Monday’s match at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium, when De Miguel had broken into the attacking third and was about to shoot before being run over by the Equatoguinean keeper.

Judicial procedure for accidental deaths

The Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands explained that any death without a natural cause – termed a judicial death – must automatically trigger an investigation, a step confirmed by the Homicide Group of the Policía Nacional de España.

Spanish law has no precedent for prosecuting a player over an accidental collision in a contact sport such as football, regardless of the severity of the action.

UEFA announced that a minute of silence will be observed in all its matches this week as a mark of respect.

The governing body also issued a statement expressing deep condolences, saying the European football community mourns the loss of forward Jesús de Miguel Alameda and will observe the minute of silence at every UEFA fixture.
