Spanish club Tenerife faces tragedy after player collapses on pitch

Spanish forward Jesus de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday after collapsing during a match for CD Tenerife on Monday night, when his neurological condition worsened despite being rushed to hospital. The club confirmed his passing at 8:00 a.m., describing the loss as unbearable for the team and supporters.

Sport journalist Kieran Horn of Digital reported that CD Tenerife issued a statement on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, at 8:00 a.m., announcing the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda. The club said it was "racked with pain" and could find no words of comfort.

Spanish media initially claimed he suffered a cardiac arrest but was resuscitated before being taken to the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria and placed in intensive care. On Monday the club said he was stable, yet less than 24 hours later his condition deteriorated.

The incident unfolded in the closing stages of the football match when De Miguel chased a long ball and was struck by a flying knee from opponent Jesus Owono, who received a red card for the challenge. The 30‑year‑old lay motionless on the pitch for several seconds before teammates called for medical assistance.

Video footage later showed Owono turning round to check on De Miguel while other players looked on in distress. Despite the seriousness, Tenerife had earlier issued a positive statement on Monday.

Andorra, the opponents on the day, posted a message on social media sending strength and hoping for a swift recovery, expressing a "very strong hug" to the player, his family and Tenerife.

De Miguel joined Tenerife at the start of the previous season and contributed 11 goals in 29 games to secure promotion to the Spanish second tier. This season he had only featured as a substitute, logging 81 minutes across 11 fixtures.

On Monday he was set for his longest appearance, entering in the 59th minute with Tenerife leading 2‑0, but Andorra fought back, scoring twice and seeing a player from each side sent off before the match was abandoned deep into added time.
