Hoeness claims Wirtz would have performed better at Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has revived his public chase of 23‑year‑old German midfielder Florian Wirtz, insisting the player would have performed better for the Bavarian giants than he does at Liverpool, where he joined for €125 million after leaving Bayer Leverkusen in 2025.

Hoeness was a key figure in the transfer tug‑of‑war two years ago when Wirtz departed Bayer Leverkusen. The German midfielder ultimately chose a move to Anfield, signing for Liverpool under former manager Arne Slot after the club’s Premier League title success. Hoeness says the decision cost Bayern a chance to secure the player.

“Florian Wirtz would play much better for Bayern than he does at Liverpool,” Hoeness told Welt am Sonntag. “I watch a lot of his games. They haven’t integrated him properly at all.” He added that at Leverkusen Wirtz “got every ball”, whereas at Liverpool he is “just one among many”.

Hoeness’s vision for Bayern

The Bayern chief described signing Wirtz as a dream, hoping to pair the 23‑year‑old with Jamal Musiala as two of Germany’s most exciting prospects. He believes their combined talent would rejuvenate the club’s attacking play. Hoeness’s comments reflect lingering disappointment after Wirtz rejected Bayern back in 2025.

Wirtz’s Liverpool reality

Wirtz arrived at Liverpool for €125 million and signed a long‑term contract, yet Hoeness insists the Reds have failed to build their attack around the German international. He explicitly ruled out Bayern as a fallback solution, stating the player is committed to Liverpool and will be integrated there.

Recent performances have shown slight signs of improvement, but market rumours of a possible departure from Merseyside continue to circulate among insiders. Hoeness remains convinced that Bayern would benefit from Wirtz’s abilities, while Liverpool aim to rectify his role in the squad.
