Bayern chairman Uli Hoeness demands humility from Lennart Karl

Bayern‑chairman Uli Hoeness sharply criticised the 18‑year‑old Bayern Munich talent Lennart Karl and demands more humility and full commitment to his development. The comments followed an injury to Karl’s left thigh, which caused him to play fewer matches and miss Germany’s 2026 World Cup squad. Hoeness wants to offer the teenager a serious conversation soon.
Criticism and concerns from Hoeness
Hoeness warned that Karl receives too much protection and emphasised that young players need pressure to prove themselves. He told Die Welt on Sunday: “I plan to have a serious conversation with him. He thinks he is already a superstar, but that is not the case. Young players need humility.” He added: “Young players also need pressure. I do not know if it is good for Lennart Karl that he is constantly over‑protected.”
The injury to Karl’s left thigh occurred during a training session, a week before the 2026 World Cup began. Because of that setback he could not take part in the tournament with Germany. Since his return his playing minutes have been limited.
Karl has played only nine matches this season, a total of 267 minutes, and has scored one goal. This scarce output follows an earlier period in which he, wearing the Bayern shirt, delivered nine goals and eight assists. His form has not yet returned.

Karl's earlier performances and records
In October 2025, at 17 years and 242 days old, Karl became the youngest player ever to score for Bayern Munich in the Champions League, during a 4‑0 victory over Club Brugge. He was named man of the match in that game, his first start in that competition. The previous season he delivered nine goals and eight assists, establishing himself as one of the most promising talents in the squad.
The German newspaper reported that within the club there are concerns about Karl’s focus, partly due to his frequent activity on social media and public appearances with his influencer girlfriend. These aspects are seen as possible distractions from his football development.
Hoeness hopes that the planned conversation will give Karl the necessary pressure and humility, so that he can regain his level and become a regular asset for Bayern again. The chairman continues to monitor the development of the young winger closely.
