Julian Brandt praises Wirtz as the best German player at Liverpool

Julian Brandt praises Wirtz as the best German player at Liverpool

During the Spielmacher podcast, the thirty‑year‑old Ajax star Julian Brandt says with great enthusiasm that his compatriot Florian Wirtz is “by far” the best German player, despite the critical voices surrounding his performances at Liverpool. Brandt points to Wirtz’s recent assist against Brentford (1‑2) and first goal against Villarreal (4‑3).

Brandt's praise for Wirtz

Brandt, who played for Borussia Dortmund for many years, now represents Ajax and has 48 caps for Germany to his name. He emphasizes that Wirtz, who moved from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool in the summer of 2025 for €125 million, is, in his view, “the best player in Germany, by far.” The statement underscores Brandt’s conviction that Wirtz’s talent is indisputable.

Despite the growing rumours that Wirtz should leave Liverpool, Brandt believes a club change is not necessary. “I don’t even think he needs to change clubs, despite all the rumours that are now circulating,” he says. For Brandt, the German midfielder is still in the right place.

Brandt outlines the profile of a typical Premier League‑player: strong in one‑on‑one duels, physically dominant and powerful in the crossing. Wirtz, on the other hand, is, according to Brandt, an elegant player who runs on his toes and barely ever lands on his heel while running. These contrasts make Wirtz, according to Brandt, unique in the English competition.

The 48‑time international especially praises Wirtz’s ability to move between the lines and solve difficult game situations. “The way he moves between the lines and finds solutions in tough situations is exceptional,” Brandt explains. For him, this is the core of Wirtz’s playing style.

Wirtz's recent breakthrough

In recent weeks Wirtz seems to be finding his footing at Liverpool. After an assist in a 1‑2 loss to Brentford, he scored his first goal of the season last week in a 4‑3 victory over Villarreal. These moments give Brandt reason to be more optimistic about the future of the German midfielder.

Brandt recalls that Wirtz was brought to Anfield a year ago by Arne Slot. Since then the player, despite a difficult start, has slowly increased his impact. Brandt now sees no reason why Wirtz cannot develop into one of the absolute stand‑outs in England.

With his praise, Brandt sends a strong signal to both Liverpool fans and the wider football world: Wirtz has the quality to develop into a top player, regardless of the initial criticism. His words could positively influence the perception of German talents in the Premier League.
