Littbarski slams Köln's tactics after goalless draw with Schalke

The roar of the crowd at the RheinEnergieStadion faded as Pierre Littbarski, the 1990 World Cup winner, slipped into the stands, reuniting with former 1. FC Köln teammates before the home clash with FC Schalke 04. The atmosphere felt nostalgic yet tense, hinting at the high stakes for the hosts.

Littbarski was invited alongside other club legends to attend the match, a gesture meant to celebrate the club’s heritage. The 66‑year‑old former midfielder arrived with a sense of duty to back the team against a compact Schalke side.

Post‑match outburst

The game ended in a goalless draw, prompting Littbarski to upload a short video to Instagram in which he voiced his disappointment. “Today you can throw the game in the trash bin,” he declared, insisting that Köln should have secured a win against what he called a ‘sub‑par’ Schalke outfit.

His ire focused on manager René Wagner’s tactical setup and the timing of the substitutions. Littbarski questioned the decision to replace Mikey Moore after 68 minutes, noting Moore’s fresh legs and positive actions, and he could not understand why Said El Mala was withdrawn at the 80‑minute mark.

Pre‑match remarks and tactical grievances

Littbarski also criticised Linton Maina’s positioning and accused El Mala of lingering too often in the centre, limiting offensive space. He suggested that Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, who operates from a wide starting position, would have provided the necessary breadth.

The former German international called for more tempo and forward thrust from the full‑backs, singling out Borna Sosa and Sebastian Sebulonsen as players who failed to add the required width. Overall, he argued that Köln pressed the tightly organised Schalke too little throughout the 90 minutes.

Even before the match, Littbarski had aired his concerns during a talk‑evening with Thomas Häßler, likening the club’s erratic displays to ‘Wackelpudding’ and decrying what he described as ‘far too much mediocrity’ in the squad.

His outspoken assessment adds another voice to the ongoing debate about Köln’s tactical direction and squad depth, underscoring the pressure on René Wagner to deliver a more decisive performance in future fixtures.
