Backlash erupts as El Mala’s shove injures two Schalke players

Said El Mala apologised after his shove sparked a mid‑air collision between Schalke 04 teammates Soufiane El‑Faouzi and Robin Gosens during the 1. FC Köln versus Schalke 04 match, leaving both players bleeding, hospitalised and forced off in the 43rd minute. Fans blasted him for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The incident unfolded just before half‑time, prompting immediate medical attention. The clash occurred in the early stages of the 1. FC Köln‑Schalke 04 encounter, adding tension to an already heated fixture.

Bleeding injuries and early substitution

The collision forced both Schalke players to receive lengthy treatment on the pitch, their shirts stained with blood and head bandages applied before they were taken to hospital. Medical staff worked for several minutes before the duo were escorted off the field.

Supporters of Schalke quickly turned on El Mala, accusing him of unsportsmanlike conduct, yet the referee refrained from issuing any card for the incident. Social media erupted with criticism, demanding stricter disciplinary measures.

"First of all, I’m incredibly sorry," El Mala told Sky. "I didn’t even realise I’d pushed him that hard; I was just using my body to create space while battling two players." He maintained that his intention was merely to create space amid a crowded midfield battle.

"I’m incredibly sorry. I hope they’re both okay. After they received treatment I apologised straight away and said I hadn’t meant for that to happen," he added, later posting another apology on his Instagram story. The Instagram story featured a short video of the player expressing remorse, aiming to quell the growing outrage.
