Tottenham’s £70m gamble tests ambition for Gakpo as Spurs push

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a £70 million bid for Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo after Liverpool set that valuation, with the north London club already contacting the player’s representatives as the new Premier League season draws near, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Romano said: “I told you to keep an eye on Cody Gakpo because Gakpo is a target for Tottenham,” adding that “Tottenham had Contact with the agency representing Gakpo. Tottenham liked the player and believed he could be the right addition for Roberto De Zerbi. Now it depends on the price.”

Roberto De Zerbi wants greater flexibility across the front line, and Gakpo’s ability to operate on the left, through the middle, or in a fluid attacking role fits the profile Spurs are seeking. His Premier League experience and tactical adaptability add depth and variety to the attack.

Liverpool stand firm on a £70 million valuation, stating they are not pushing Gakpo out and are very happy with him. Romano explained that “the only way to open doors is if Tottenham present a really good financial proposal,” indicating a substantial offer is required to change Liverpool’s stance.

From Tottenham’s perspective, the situation creates a familiar transfer dilemma: commit fully with a strong financial package or walk away and pursue alternatives. Prolonged uncertainty would rarely help squad planning with the season fast approaching.
