UCL Van Dijk demands more after Ngumoha inspires Liverpool comeback

Anfield buzzed on Tuesday as Liverpool found themselves 2‑0 down inside the first half‑hour of a Champions League tie. Captain Virgil van Dijk said the six‑time European champions needed a bigger contribution from 18‑year‑old Rio Ngumoha after his impressive display against Villarreal.

Ngumoha sparks Liverpool revival

Ngumoha’s pace and skill turned the tide, providing two assists for Alexis Mac Allister, who netted a brace to help Liverpool claw back to a 4‑3 victory. The Argentine midfielder’s goals came after the youngster’s incisive passes, sealing a dramatic fightback.

Villarreal were guided by Inigo Perez, a close friend and former assistant of Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, who exposed flaws in Liverpool’s high‑intensity approach. His tactics highlighted the home side’s defensive vulnerabilities early on.

It marked Liverpool’s first overturn of a two‑goal Champions League deficit since beating Villarreal in the 2022 semi‑finals, preserving a 100 percent win record in this season’s competition.

“He was a constant threat, and their defender had a tough time,” Van Dijk said.
“Everyone is chipping in, but for him to work with Mo last year was obviously massive. Mo was one of the best wingers at the club and experienced everything, so why not soak in all that information, show it on the pitch, and display your own qualities? I think he has shown glimpses of it this season, but there is still much more to come,” Van Dijk added.
