Man Utd’s recruitment chief pushes for Nagelsmann as Carrick hangs
Christopher Vivell, Manchester United’s head of recruitment, is reportedly pressing the club to dismiss Michael Carrick and install Julian Nagelsmann as head coach, a move that could reshape the Red Devils’ season after a 4‑1 Champions League loss to Como on Wednesday.
The 4‑1 thrashing at the San Siro left United trailing in their Champions League group and intensified calls for change, with supporters and minority owners INEOS watching closely. The Sun rose over Old Trafford as discussions intensified.
United host Bournemouth on Sunday; another defeat could provide the final straw for INEOS, the club’s minority shareholders, and accelerate Carrick’s exit.
Vivell pushes for Nagelsmann
Vivell has long favoured Nagelsmann, recalling their collaboration at RB Leipzig. He reportedly contacted the German coach’s camp last June and is now renewing the approach despite Nagelsmann’s duties as Germany’s national manager.
Alongside Nagelsmann, United are evaluating Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte. The Red Devils have already been turned down by Fabian Hurzeler, while Unai Emery remains admired but is unlikely to leave Aston Villa.

Boardroom tussle and frontrunners
United insider Sullyexcl noted that Vivell never intended Carrick to be permanent and is eager to bring Nagelsmann in. Alex Crook added that Howe is currently the favourite, with director of football Jason Wilcox leaning towards him, and that Sir Jim Ratcliffe appears to side with Wilcox.
Despite Wilcox’s public support for Carrick, behind‑the‑scenes contacts have been made with Nagelsmann and Howe to gauge interest, positioning them as the two frontrunners for the vacancy.
Crook suggested Vivell feels sidelined by Wilcox and that Ratcliffe’s weight may influence the final decision, highlighting a boardroom split over the club’s direction.
Carrick refuses to confirm whether Fernandes remains captain at United
Journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Fabian Hurzeler, who initially rejected United, could become more receptive to a move next summer.
