Champions League interest forces Man Utd to chase Julian Nagelsmann
Under the floodlights of Old Trafford, the silence of the empty stands seemed to echo the urgency inside the club’s boardroom, where a decision on a new manager looms larger than ever.
Nagelsmann emerges as United target
Julian Nagelsmann has signalled his interest in the Manchester United job, and United may have to move quickly because another Champions League club is reportedly also courting the German manager. The 39‑year‑old, who left the Germany national team in July after a World Cup exit at the hands of Paraguay, is now being linked as a leading contender should Michael Carrick be dismissed.
Carrick under pressure
Michael Carrick’s position is precarious just months after being appointed permanently, with the Red Devils having won only two of their opening eleven games across all competitions. After Wednesday’s 4‑1 defeat at Como, Bruno Fernandes publicly criticised Carrick’s tactics, and Carrick will be in the dugout for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth. Another poor result could trigger his dismissal as United’s hierarchy weigh up potential replacements.
Among the names well liked at Old Trafford are Unai Emery and Eddie Howe, while Fabian Hurzeler and Antonio Conte publicly distanced themselves from the role on Friday.
Carrick promises measures as Manchester United sinks
Beyond United, Sky Germany RB Leipzig are ‘strongly interested’ in Nagelsmann. Leipzig, under new head coach Martin Demichelis, have a mixed start to the Bundesliga season – three wins and three losses – and most recently suffered a 6‑1 thrashing by Bayern.
Leipzig share United’s Champions League woes, having endured heavy defeats to Como and Real Madrid. Nagelsmann’s own record in Europe includes reaching the Champions League semi‑finals in his first season with the Red Bull‑owned club and finishing runner‑up in both the Bundesliga and the German Cup the following year.
Carrick insists: I will hold the umbrella while United gets wet
Former Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn warned Nagelsmann against the Manchester United job, saying, “From his perspective, it’s not an easy situation.” He added, “He isn’t someone with extensive experience at the very highest level, particularly when it comes to foreign clubs.” Betting odds now list Eddie Howe at 8/13, Nagelsmann at 5/1 and other candidates further down the scale.
