Ronaldinho's surprise return fuels Ravenna's branding gamble

At 46, former Brazilian star Ronaldinho Gaúcho is set to step onto a professional pitch again, a stark contrast to the dazzling performances that earned him World Cup glory and two FIFA World Player of the Year awards. His comeback will arrive in Italy’s third tier, far from the stages that once defined his career.

Debut details confirmed

Ravenna announced on Friday the 23rd that Ronaldinho will make his first appearance on 15 November against Forlì. The club, competing in Serie C, issued a joint post on the player’s and its own social‑media channels to confirm the date. The announcement marks the first official match for the former Brazilian since his 2015 spell with Fluminense.

The club’s post featured a bilingual message. “The magic never left. Now is the time to bring it back onto the pitch. 15 November, Ronaldinho is back. In yellow and red. Ravenna vs Forlì. The return is real,” the player and the club wrote.

Beyond the pitch: branding gamble

Ravenna’s recruitment of the global icon forms part of a wider project to turn the modest club into an internationally recognised brand. The signing is presented as both a sporting gamble and a marketing strategy aimed at attracting sponsors and expanding the fan base. In addition to strengthening the squad, Ronaldinho will take part in commercial actions and events designed to raise the club’s visibility.

The contract explicitly provides for Ronaldinho’s involvement in advertising campaigns, international events and other commercial initiatives. Club officials stress that his contribution will not be limited to minutes on the field, but will also encompass promotional activities that can generate revenue. This dual role reflects the club’s ambition to leverage his fame for financial growth.

Cipriani’s vision and Ravenna’s history

The move was facilitated by businessman Ignazio Cipriani, who assumed control of Ravenna in 2024. Cipriani has pursued a reconstruction programme aimed at strengthening the club’s finances and sporting structure, with the ultimate goal of reaching the elite tiers of Italian football. Founded in 1913, Ravenna has never been a top‑flight side, though it reached Serie B in the 1990s before suffering financial difficulties and successive relegations.

Ronaldinho’s résumé includes a 2002 World Cup triumph with Brazil, two FIFA World Player of the Year awards in 2004 and 2005, and a Champions League victory with Barcelona in 2006. Yet more than a decade has passed since he last played professional football, raising questions about his physical condition and ability to cope with the pace of Serie C. His legacy in Brasil remains iconic, and he is still revered as a Brasileira legend. The club remains confident that his experience and talent can aid the project.

Supporters are already marking 15 November on calendars, eager to witness the former Brazilian’s return. The juxtaposition of a celebrated career with a modest third‑division setting underscores how the club hopes to blend sporting ambition with commercial appeal. Whether the experiment succeeds will become clear when the whistle blows in Forlì.
