Manchester United fans spar with Aston Villa over Unai Emery rumours

Manchester United and Aston Villa supporters are sparring online after rumours that Unai Emery could abandon his Villa job for Old Trafford should Michael Carrick lose his job, with United currently sitting 16th in the Premier League and having dropped their last two Champions League fixtures.

Villa fan and broadcaster Dan Bardell fired back at Jamie Carragher’s suggestion that Emery would crave a “giant” club, writing on X: “Currently has more chance of winning the #UCL at #AVFC with what we have, compared to that mess in Manchester. We aren’t talking about Barca or Real Madrid here. Stays where he is.”

A United supporter, identified as Rick, replied that “The arrogance of Villa fans is becoming quite extraordinary… Emery is an excellent manager, but the idea that managing Villa represents the pinnacle of his career is laughable. Man United is a massive step up from Aston Villa.” Bardell answered succinctly: “It’s not 1999, Rick.”

United's managerial options

TEAMtalk Emery has been among the names United examined when they appointed Michael Carrick last season, and he remains on the shortlist as the club looks beyond Carrick’s tenure.

Jason Wilcox, a key figure backed by co‑owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, continues to rate the Villa boss highly, yet insiders stress that any mid‑season switch for Emery would be extremely difficult for Man Utd to execute.
