Board fears mutiny at Old Trafford as Carrick’s United limp towards Bournemouth

Man Utd’s 4‑1 loss to Como in the Champions League left the Red Devils on a seven‑match winless run and sparked board concerns about a possible player mutiny at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick. The defeat on Tuesday amplified tensions after captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned Carrick’s tactics.

Board worries of dissent

The Man Utd hierarchy are ‘concerned’ over a potential player mutiny, reports say. Journalist Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider, “The Man United board have got to be concerned about the recent negative comments being made public. When you’ve got this dissent that’s going on within the camp right now, and then previous situations with Erik ten Hag, it doesn’t paint a real good picture of Manchester United.” Carrick’s side must secure a win against Bournemouth on Sunday to halt the slide.

Lisandro Martinez spoke out after the recent Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, criticising the board for not supporting Carrick in the summer. His comments added to the growing unease among the squad.

Captain Bruno Fernandes was also critical, questioning the tactical setup against Como in the club’s most recent match. His public remarks have fed the narrative of internal discontent.

Football Insider claimed the board are “concerned about a stream of negative outbursts against the club” from their own players, underscelling the fragile atmosphere at the club.

Financial and player fallout

Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson reckons United will have to pay around £100 million to replace Fernandes when the Red Devils captain eventually leaves Old Trafford. He warned that finding a player of Fernandes’s quality for less than that sum is “very unlikely”.

Diego Leon, signed in the summer of 2025, could look for a way out if he does not gain more game time. Agent Renato Bittar told ABC Deportes, “If there isn’t a plan to break into the first team between December and January, we’ll look for a loan somewhere where he can compete, get playing time, and return to Manchester.” He added that the Championship and other European leagues are options, but Leon is performing well with the U21 side and is in excellent physical condition.
