Manchester United consider Nagelsmann as Carrick's reign falters
Manchester United are reportedly weighing former Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann as a replacement for interim boss Michael Carrick, after the club’s 4‑1 loss to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday the 21st sparked renewed pressure on the coaching staff.
Coaching crisis deepens
The Sun United’s board have fast‑tracked the recruitment of Julian Nagelsmann to replace Michael Carrick. The German, who led the Germany national side, is now being evaluated as a possible permanent manager.
Carrick described the 4‑1 loss to Como as ‘disappointing’ and ‘unacceptable’ in the post‑match interview. He demanded that every player and staff member accept responsibility for the performance.
Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes also voiced his displeasure, criticising Carrick after being substituted with 22 minutes left in the second half. Fernandes’ outburst added further pressure on the interim coach.
Carrick vows to restore United’s identity after 4-1 defeat to Como
United had already considered Nagelsmann before appointing Carrick in May, a month before the World Cup. At that time the German coach was contracted to lead Germany through Euro 2028, but Germany’s early exit to Paraguay in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup led to his dismissal and the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as national team boss. With his club duties now free, Nagelsmann becomes a realistic option for United.
Other candidates in the mix
Other names on United’s shortlist include Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler, who has impressed with his side’s early season form. Antonio Conte has also resurfaced in speculation, though his history of clashes with players and executives raises doubts about his suitability.
United sit 13th in the Premier League, having recorded only one victory so far and failing to win in their last five matches. The poor run underscores the urgency of a managerial change.
