Carrick vows to restore United’s identity after 4-1 defeat to Como

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick used a five‑minute, thirty‑second press conference on Wednesday to acknowledge the club’s disastrous start to the season and to outline a plan to get the team back on track. Speaking before any journalist questions, Carrick said, “I’ll start today,” before detailing the frustration among supporters, his own responsibility and the deep‑rooted resilience he believes still exists at United.

The Red Devils have won only two of eleven matches across all competitions, sit 13th in the Premier League, 20th in the Champions League group and have already been knocked out of the League Cup. The 4‑1 loss to Como on Wednesday, which Carrick called “unacceptable,” added fuel to a growing fire of criticism from fans and the media.

Carrick stressed that United was built on “modesty, humility and hard work” and warned against a “right‑to‑success” mentality. “It’s my responsibility to field a team that represents this club and its supporters – a team they can be proud of because of the identity we embody,” he said.

He also referenced recent public criticism from senior players Lisandro Martínez and Bruno Fernandes, noting that the squad’s recent performances have fallen short of the standards set during his own playing days under Sir Alex Ferguson. “We had great players and a great manager, but it was never about individuals. It was always about what was best for the club,” Carrick reminded the audience.

Despite the bleak snapshot, Carrick expressed confidence that United can regain its identity and improve results. “I’m still motivated to work on this,” he affirmed, promising to restore the club’s traditional values and competitive edge.

When asked about the ongoing tension with captain Bruno Fernandes, who has publicly questioned the tactical approach at Como, Carrick replied that the priority remains the team’s cohesion and the club’s long‑term interests. “The most important thing for me is the team, the squad dynamics and the football club. I will always do what is best for the football club,” he concluded.
