Manchester City pushes for BVB jewel Mathis Albert – Money for young talents
In talks with Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund is trying to close the financial gap created by the sale of stars, and sees 17‑year‑old forward Mathis Albert as a worthwhile target. The young US international has already made two senior appearances for BVB and is causing a stir in the Youth League.
Strategic shift at the Borussians
Hendrik Deckers/GettyImages reports that BVB has returned to the transfer policy that made it strong in the early and mid‑2010s. The club wants to sign young talents for little money, develop them itself and, if necessary, sell them for a profit. Albert is seen as one of the potential golden geese in the stable.
Manchester City shows interest
According to Sport, Manchester City has been exploring the possibilities of signing Albert for months. The English Premier League club is said to be ready to pay up to €20 million – four times the market value of €5 million listed on transfermarkt.de. However, a concrete offer has not yet reached the Borussians.
Challenges and possible solutions
Since England is not part of the EU, Manchester City cannot sign minor players from abroad directly. Therefore, a “parking” arrangement with a partner club such as Troyes in France is being considered, a model that might only become relevant in the winter because Albert will turn 18 next summer. Albert is officially under contract only until the summer of 2027, which was reportedly extended on a long‑term basis last year and is set to take effect on his 18th birthday on 21 May 2027.
BVB has already received calls from Manchester City in the past, for example when Sebastian Kehl was contacted. Despite the lack of a concrete offer, the interest of the Sky Blues remains unchanged, according to reports, and the potential money could fall into the hands the club needs for further youth investments.
Albert has made a name for himself not only through his two senior appearances but especially through strong performances in the Youth League. He became the youngest goal‑scorer in the history of the US national team, which has sparked a full‑blown hype in his home country.
The potential transfer would not only bring money into the Borussians’ coffers but also validate the model Dortmund has pursued for years: discover talent early, develop it, and pass it on for a profit. Whether Manchester City finalises the deal depends on regulatory hurdles and Albert’s own desire for a clear departure.
