Dortmund lock in Kovač until 2029 to cement recent revival

Niko Kovač has signed a new deal with Borussia Dortmund that runs until 30 June 2029, keeping the 54‑year‑old head coach and his assistants Robert Kovač and Filip Tapalovic at the Westfalenstadion.

Why the club chose continuity

Lars Ricken, Managing Director of Sports, said the extension is a “clear signal of continuity and stability” after a “very good path” since Kovač arrived a little over a year and a half ago. He added that the coach has “consistently developed the team and is highly regarded within our club”.

Sporting Director Ole Book echoed the sentiment, praising Kovač’s meticulousness and the trust that has grown between them since his first day. Book highlighted the coach’s calmness, experience and daily communication as key to BVB’s progress.

Results that justified the vote of confidence

When Kovač took over in February 2025, Dortmund were languishing in 11th place. He swiftly turned the tide, guiding the side to UEFA Champions League qualification in the 2024/25 season and then to a second‑place league finish with 73 points – the fifth‑highest points tally in club history.

Last season’s campaign also featured a disappointing Super Cup loss to Bayern Munich (1‑2), but the team rebounded, winning six of seven league matches this season. The most recent setback was a draw against Werder Bremen, where a 2‑0 lead was surrendered in the final minute.

What the extension means for both parties

Kovač said the new contract reflects a shared vision: “We have set a clear course for development, built important foundations and will not rest on our laurels. We see great potential and, together with full conviction, can achieve a great deal.”

The coach now faces the challenge of taking Dortmund beyond Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga while maintaining the momentum that has already secured a Champions League group‑stage clash with Bodø/Glimt on Wednesday.
