Liverpool’s Dijk owns costly error as Reds rally past Villarreal
Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk admitted his early mistake but praised the comeback that kept the Reds unbeaten in the Champions League after a 4‑3 win over Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday evening. The Dutch defender highlighted the team’s resilience while acknowledging the costly error that gave the visitors an early lead.
Early setback and Van Dijk’s error
Villarreal opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Georges Mikautadze capitalised on a mis‑judged headed back‑pass from Virgil van Dijk to Alisson Becker. Sergi Cardona added a second shortly after, giving the visitors a two‑goal cushion within the first half‑hour. Van Dijk later described the moment as “a terrible start” and “a bad day at the office personally”, but insisted the team rallied together.
Liverpool responded before the break, with Alexis Mac Allister finding the net just before half‑time, followed swiftly by a header from Ronald Araujo to level the tie. The equaliser restored belief, and the Reds entered the interval on level terms after trailing by two goals.
The second half belonged to Liverpool. Mac Allister completed his brace early in the period, and Florian Wirtz added a cool finish to push the lead beyond doubt before the 70th minute. The German midfielder’s goal capped a swift double that saw Liverpool comfortably ahead.
Ngumoha shines as Liverpool turn the tide
Eighteen‑year‑old Rio Ngumoha was instrumental, providing two assists that underpinned the comeback. Operating on the right wing – a less natural position for him – Ngumoha’s deliveries set up both Mac Allister’s goals and the later strike from Wirtz. His performance earned widespread praise from teammates and pundits alike.
After the match, Van Dijk hailed Ngumoha, saying “He’s pretty electric at times and he showed it again. He was a complete threat constantly, and their defender had a tough time.” He added that senior players such as Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah have helped the youngster develop, and affirmed that “there is still much more to come.”
Villarreal managed a late consolation when Tani Oluwaseyi scored with three minutes remaining, but the goal proved insufficient to alter the outcome. The Spaniards’ effort highlighted the narrow margin of the encounter.
Looking ahead: contract talks and unbeaten run
Liverpool remain unbeaten in the Champions League campaign, securing three points despite the early setback. The club are reportedly keen to tie down Ngumoha on a long‑term deal, although negotiations are still ongoing with no agreement announced. Van Dijk’s own performance, error and redemption, encapsulated the fine margins that will define the Reds’ European journey.
