Chelsea and Palace clash over Ahanor Honest’s £40‑48m move

Chelsea and Palace clash over Ahanor Honest’s £40‑48m move

Chelsea are poised to sign 18‑year‑old Ahanor Honest from Atalanta, with reports valuing the deal at £40million, €48million or over €50million, and the defender is set to travel to London for his medical. The move comes after Chelsea opened talks last week and after they already secured Marco Palestra from the same Italian side.

Chelsea see Honest as a versatile defensive option. The 18‑year‑old has already earned two caps for ITALY and can operate as a centre‑back, left‑back or even on the wing. Manager Xabi Alonso is weighing whether to integrate him into the first‑team squad for the 2026/27 campaign or to send him out on loan.

Palace’s defensive urgency

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, have identified a pressing need for defensive depth ahead of their Europa League commitments. The Eagles already rely on loan signing Axel Disasi from Chelsea, but an injury to Chadi Riad has left them short‑handed. Securing Honest on loan would provide immediate cover across the back line.

Loan mechanics and Premier League rules

Premier League regulations prevent a club from receiving two loan players from the same parent club. Because Palace already have Disasi on loan, the proposed arrangement involves Atalanta loaning Honest directly to Palace, with the player formally joining Chelsea after the season. An Italian report quoted Gianluca Di Marzi saying, “Il Crystal Palace accelera per Honest Ahanor e mette le mani sul giovane difensore”.

Reports state the transfer fee for Honest is set at €48million, including add‑ons, while the earlier acquisition of Marco Palestra was reported at well over €50million. Some sources also cite a £40million valuation for the move. The €48million figure was highlighted in a Getty‑captioned photo of Honest during a Serie A match.

For Chelsea, securing Honest secures a highly‑rated young defender for the future, complementing their recent signings, including a match at Accor Stadium during the Sydney Super Cup. As the club’s communications put it, “Get ahead of the start of the season with this reinforcement.” For Palace, the loan offers a stop‑gap solution to their defensive crisis without breaching loan limits. Both clubs stand to benefit as the transfer deadline approaches.
