Manchester United and Michael Carrick push for Zirkzee departure

Manchester United have turned down a bid for forward Joshua Zirkzee after Michael Carrick approved a move. The Dutch striker has struggled since his £36.5m transfer from Bologna in 2024, scoring three goals in his first season and only two last term. Carrick left him on the bench for United’s 2‑0 loss to Hull City and 5‑2 win over Ipswich.

Italian clubs vie for Zirkzee

Juventus tabled a €2.5m loan fee with a €30m buyout, but United have asked for a €35m package and an obligation to buy rather than an option. Fiorentina entered the race with a €5m loan proposal and a €30m purchase clause, while the Dutchman is said to accept a €3.5m net salary. Gianluca Di Maria confirmed talks are "in full swing" between United and Juventus.

Zirkzee has recorded nine goals and four assists in 75 appearances for United, most of them as a substitute. Last season he managed three goal contributions in 26 games, only five of which were starts. The arrival of Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha has further limited his chances.

"Results are nice to win like that," Carrick said after the Ipswich victory. "I said after the game last week that we were disappointed and it has hurt all week. We managed it well and didn’t make too much of it in the end."

So United are prepared to part ways, with Carrick indicating that a departure would free a squad spot and allow the club to pursue a new striker. Juventus have approached United again, and Fiorentina have already shifted focus to signing Beto from Everton after Zirkzee turned down their offer.
