Chelsea's Camara deal boosts City chase as Madrid Bernabeu dream ends

Chelsea have reached an agreement with AS Monaco to sign Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara, with reports placing the fee at between £38 million and £39 million or €45 million including bonuses. The Blues move follows the recent arrival of Liverpool goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, whose signing was confirmed earlier this week.

Chelsea expressed interest while Enzo Fernandez continues to push for a move away from Stamford Bridge, meaning a new midfielder is essential.

Camara's profile and experience

The 22‑year‑old has enjoyed two impressive seasons at Monaco, featuring in 75 matches across all competitions and recording six goals with 11 assists. He earned 49 caps for Senegal and featured heavily during the World Cup, underscoring his international pedigree.

Earlier in the summer, Liverpool, Manchester United and Crystal Palace were linked with the midfielder, but the Blues appear set to win the race.

Fernandez's future and Chelsea's strategy

Enzo Fernandez, the 2022 World Cup winner, was hoping to join Real Madrid earlier in the summer but the Bernabeu move fell through. His desire to leave Stamford Bridge has intensified, and Camara’s arrival is seen as paving the way for Fernandez’s exit, provided Manchester City meet Chelsea’s steep demands.

Manchester City have already benefited from the Blues’ €45 million‑plus deal for Ayyoub Bouaddi, reported at £86 million, which strengthens their pursuit of Fernandez.

Alonso praised Martinez, saying: “It’s great to have him. Even if we conceded three goals, he had a straight impact and helped the team really well. He is a great personality and a great goalkeeper.” Martinez added: “I spoke with Chelsea legends John Terry and Petr Cech. I know how big this club is and what we want to achieve this season.”

Reports on Camara’s fee differ, with figures of £38 million, £39 million and €45 million cited, while Chelsea’s earlier £86 million signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi was also noted. The club are still finalising the payment schedule and bonuses before the transfer is completed.

Should the deal be sealed, Camara will provide competition for Moises Caicedo in a double‑pivot and give Xabi Alonso a versatile option, while Manchester City’s chances of securing Fernandez improve markedly.
