Champions League suspends the anthem to honour Jesus de Miguel

During Tuesday evening, the Champions League matches began in a mood of solemnity. UEFA arranged commemorative initiatives to honour Jesus de Miguel, Tenerife’s striker who died that day, and the victims of the Urda railway accident in the province of Toledo.
The top European football governing body told Spanish clubs that the Champions League anthem will not be played in their stadiums. This decision was presented as a symbolic gesture to underline the national mourning and bring international football closer to the people involved. Across all UEFA competition venues a minute of silence was observed in memory of Jesús de Miguel, who died at thirty after a serious illness during the Tenerife‑Andorra match, and the victims of the Urda accident.
