Carragher urges sack of Carrick as Neville brands it Groundhog Day

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have both called for Manchester United to dismiss Michael Carrick after the Red Devils suffered a 3‑0 home defeat to Bournemouth, a loss that left them 16th in the Premier League. United have now lost five of their last eight games, including a 4‑1 Champions League defeat to Como earlier in the week.

Bournemouth defeat details

Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute after Ayden Heaven’s two‑footed challenge gave away a free‑kick that was whipped by Justin Kluivert to the back post, where Rayan volleyed home. Four minutes later Leny Yoro slipped, allowing Adrien Truffert to set up Marcus Tavernier for a simple finish. Evanilson capped the win in the 71st minute, beating Senne Lammens to a Lewis Cook pass before curling a right‑footed effort into the far corner. Neville said: “It’s a nightmare for Michael Carrick.” It’s a nightmare for those two – Omar Berrada, the CEO, Jason Wilcox sat next to him. He’s shaking his head. This is Groundhog Day.” He added at full‑time that United fans were already singing the Michael Carrick song because they had seen this pattern before.

Carragher echoed the sentiment, insisting Carrick “needs to be relieved of his duties”. He argued: “Manchester United need to make that change tonight. It’s not nice to watch Michael Carrick when the fans have taken the side of the manager. The club is one of the biggest in the world and can’t stay 16th.”

Managerial options under scrutiny

Michael Carrick, when asked about his future, replied: “Listen, it’s a tough situation, there’s no hiding from it. I’ll always do what’s best for this football club, I love what I do and I feel a responsibility, but I’ll wait and see.” He also lamented the lack of a second‑half spark, calling the third goal a “killer goal”.

Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson warned that no top manager is likely to take the job at the moment, saying: “I can’t answer that, honestly, I really don’t know because of how the club is. No‑one would touch them at the moment and the way the club is and the structure of it.” Eddie Howe has emerged as a potential replacement and is reportedly being tipped to demand four January signings.

Man Utd have been told managers will swerve them if they part with Michael Carrick. The owners, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, are expected to make a decision that could disgust fans but may be deemed necessary. United’s EPL News, Squad Stats and recent form underline the urgency of a change as the Red Devils struggle to climb out of 16th place.
