Man Utd face Carrick sack after brave Bruno benching vs Bournemouth

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick appeared dejected as he confirmed Bruno Fernandes would start on the bench for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth, a decision taken after the United captain openly criticised Carrick’s tactics following the side’s 4‑1 Champions League loss at Como on Wednesday.
Technical reasons behind the bench
Speaking to The Athletic, Carrick said the omission was driven purely by football‑technical reasons, adding, “You have different options and it’s always a difficult decision. Today we feel we have to make this choice for the team.” He noted that this would be Fernandes’ sixth time on the bench in almost seven years, having sat out only five times since joining United in January 2020.
Fernandes later explained after the Como defeat that “it is a choice of the staff. Sometimes we give away space and that gives the team confidence,” suggesting his earlier criticism was not linked to the bench decision. For the Bournemouth match he will sit alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee, with de Ligt making his first start in more than three hundred days and Zirkzee still yet to score.
Midfield reshuffle and Bournemouth’s recent win
Carrick also reshaped the midfield, handing Mason Mount an opportunity while deploying an untested trio of Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos against Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook and Tyler Adams. He reinstated Leny Yoro at right‑back, dropped Lisandro Martinez for Ayden Heaven, and paired Heaven with Harry Maguire in central defence.
The Cherries had secured only their first Premier League victory of the campaign seven days earlier, meaning United needed a comfortable win to protect Carrick’s position and improve their league standing.
First‑half collapse and wider fallout
The opening half proved shambolic; United never applied sustained pressure and both conceded avoidable goals. Heaven’s reckless slide gave away a free‑kick that Rayan converted for his first Premier League goal of the season.
Bournemouth supporters, still recalling a chant aimed at former United boss Ruben Amorim, broke into “sacked in the morning” and “you’re going down with the City” chants before Marcus Tavernier doubled the lead after a slip by Yoro allowed Adrien Truffert an easy assist.
Former defender Gary Neville, on co‑commentary, described the scene as “Groundhog Day”, pointing to Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox on screen and blaming the club hierarchy for allowing the decline to persist.
Should United fail to beat Bournemouth, pundits argue Carrick’s dismissal is almost inevitable, marking a third Ineos managerial sacking in fewer than three years. The situation was highlighted by the reminder that even a chat with Sir Alex Ferguson would not have altered the decision to bench Fernandes.
