Carrick backs himself as United head into Bournemouth clash

Manchester United’s 4‑1 loss to Italian side Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night has left Michael Carrick’s position under intense scrutiny as he prepares his squad for the upcoming Bournemouth clash, while Bruno Fernandes’ public outburst adds further uncertainty to the captain’s role.

United were outclassed by Como, who are competing in the Champions League for the first time this season. The Italian side secured a 4‑1 victory, leaving the Red Devils humbled.

Tactical row after Como defeat

After the match, Fernandes blasted Carrick’s tactics, singling out the decision not to press man‑to‑man. When asked if the manager was tactically wrong, Fernandes replied, ‘That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me.’ Carrick countered on the night, saying, ‘If you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you ain’t going to win.’

When questioned whether he would drop Fernandes for the Bournemouth game, Carrick insisted he will do ‘what is best for Manchester United’. He reiterated that the most important thing is the team and dynamics of the club, and he will always act in its best interest.

Despite the heavy defeat, Carrick is set to remain in charge for the weekend match. The club, however, is actively looking at possible replacements should results not improve quickly.

Captaincy under scrutiny ahead of Bournemouth

Fernandes’ conduct has raised questions over whether the captain should feature against the Cherries on Sunday. Former United skipper Wayne Rooney urged his old teammate to be taken ‘out of the firing line.’ Carrick declined to comment on any potential stripping of the armband, saying he will do what is best for the football club.

On Friday, Carrick opened his press conference vowing to steer United back on track, declaring he is still ‘100 per cent’ the man to lift them from their current malaise. He insisted he remains the man for the job and offered no details on any disciplinary action for Fernandes.

United will travel to face Bournemouth on Sunday, with the manager expected to field his strongest lineup despite the recent turmoil. All eyes will be on whether Fernandes retains the captaincy and whether Carrick can halt the slide.
