Manchester United under Carrick face manager hunt as pressure mounts

Manchester United appear on the brink of dismissing Michael Carrick as head coach, with the club’s board under immense pressure after a string of poor results. Ben Crawford, Sport, the 45‑year‑old’s tenure could end imminently, prompting speculation over his replacement.
After guiding United to third place in last season’s Premier League, Carrick was appointed permanently in the summer. The club’s transfer budget of £153 million was spent almost entirely on midfielders. This season has begun disastrously, highlighted by a 4‑1 defeat to Como in the Champions League and a 3‑0 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, leaving United near the foot of the league table. The club’s official abbreviation, Utd, will be emblazoned on the new manager’s badge.
At the final whistle, Carrick lamented the situation, saying “Dói imenso ver‑ a passar por isto”. The remark came after the Bournemouth match, which also saw Bruno Fernandes omitted from the lineup. Fans responded with chants of “sacked in the morning” from the Cherries’ away end, while a small group inside Old Trafford applauded Carrick as he left the tunnel.
Should Carrick be removed, former United midfielder Darren Fletcher is expected to step in as interim manager. A Man side would benefit from Fletcher’s familiarity with the squad.

Jamie Carragher says Carrick benched Bruno Fernandes to embarrass him
Ex‑Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed Carrick. He stepped down in July after nearly five years at St James’ Park and is now on a coaching break. During his tenure he guided Newcastle to the Champions League and lifted the Carabao Cup in 2025, and he previously won the Championship with Bournemouth in 2015, securing promotion to the Premier League.
Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has also been linked with the role. He most recently led Napoli to the 2024/25 Serie A title before departing in June. Conte’s earlier spell at Chelsea saw him win the Premier League and FA Cup, and in a statement released earlier this month he said he is open to future projects but is not negotiating with United.
Julian Nagelsmann, who quit as Germany manager after the disappointing World Cup 2026, remains unattached. His résumé includes becoming the youngest Bundesliga manager at Hoffenheim, guiding RB Leipzig to a Champions League semi‑final, and a stint at Bayern Munich, with previous interest from English clubs.

Former United academy coach Kieran McKenna is another candidate, having overseen the club’s Under‑18s and worked under José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær with the first team. He later managed Ipswich Town, achieving back‑to‑back promotions to the Premier League, and has been on a planned sabbatical since leaving in June. However, reports suggest a substantial compensation fee could deter any suitor.
Other high‑profile names
Gareth Southgate, who stepped down as England manager in July 2024, has been mentioned as a wildcard option despite a modest club record at Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009. Roberto Martínez, most recently with Portugal where he won the Nations League, is also without a club and has previously managed Swansea City, Wigan (FA Cup winners) and Everton, though his appointment is considered unlikely.
