Bayern turn to Aaron Danks as Kompany’s hospital stay could last weeks

Bayern turn to Aaron Danks as Kompany’s hospital stay could last weeks

In the sterile corridors of a Munich hospital, 40‑year‑old Vincent Kompany (Oficial) lies on a bed, his breathing steady after Friday’s collapse during a Bayern Munich U‑23 training session. The club confirmed his condition is stable, but he will remain admitted for several more days; the update was posted on Olé.

Club medical update

Sporting director Max Eberl addressed the media before the Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg, saying the good news is that Kompany is stable. “Yesterday night I spoke with him and also with his wife. For all of us it was a very hard moment,” he said.

Eberl added that medical examinations have already yielded some results, but further tests are required to determine the cause and the time needed for recovery. “The tests have already provided some results, but more are needed to determine what is happening and how long recovery will take. He is in the best hands. The important thing is to support him emotionally, with energy and affection,” he explained.

He stressed that Bayern will not hurry Kompany’s return, insisting the priority is a calm and complete recovery. “The most important thing is to find the cause, that he recovers and can do it calmly, and that he does not return until he is fit,” Eberl affirmed.

The incident also affected the U‑23 squad, especially the 17‑ and 18‑year‑old players who witnessed the collapse. Eberl described the scene as a difficult experience for the youngsters, many of whom have never faced such negative moments.

He thanked DJK Vilzing and the Bavarian Football Association for arranging the postponement of the youth match, noting that health matters outweigh football.

Interim coaching plan

Assistant Aaron Danks will take charge of Bayern Munich for the upcoming Sunday fixture against Freiburg while Kompany remains in hospital. Danks confirmed he spoke with the coach after the incident, focusing solely on his health.

“I explained we would not talk about football. I just wanted to know how he was and make sure he was okay,” Danks said.

He added that all football matters are now in the hands of the coaching team, who will work together to keep the club moving forward.

Eberl warned that there is no set date for Kompany’s return, stating the club will give him as much time as needed and will speak in terms of weeks rather than days. He also reassured that the technical staff, led by Kompany, will remain unchanged, as the recent success rests on a strong internal team.

While medical investigations continue, Bayern prepares for its next commitments without Kompany on the bench, prioritising his full recovery above any immediate result.
