Bayern falls into UEFA triple trap after 3‑3 draw with Viking

Frustration at Bayern Munich was high after the 3‑3 draw with Viking Stavanger on the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League, because star player Michael Olise was sent off with a yellow‑red and the Norwegians still scored the late equaliser.

Olise incident and red card

Olise was shown a yellow card in the 73rd minute for a hold, and a few seconds later he threw the ball into the face of Viking captain Zlatko Tripic, which resulted in a red card. Coach Vincent Kompany called the red card "over‑stupid".

Reactions from officials

Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl criticised Tripic as a "scumbag" and emphasised that he had achieved the goal of sending a player off. Eberl dismissed a possible internal fine for Olise and said the matter would be discussed "in calm".

Viking captain Tripic, who played in Germany for Greuther Fürth from 2015 to 2017, was delighted with his provocations and stated that he had upset half of the Bayern squad.

Harry Kane, dual striker for Bayern, remained unimpressed by Tripic's actions and said such provocations are part of football. Norwegian expert Carl‑Erik Torp agreed and described Olise's behaviour as "terribly unsporting".

Kompany did not look for blame on the Norwegian, but on Olise, who in his view should have reacted differently to avoid falling into the "Tripic trap".

Despite the draw, Bayern sit after two games with only four points; captain Joshua Kimmich admitted that something is currently missing.
