Almería’s squad overhaul lands veteran Vesga from Athletic Bilbao
Almería have signed 33‑year‑old left‑footed midfielder Mikel Vesga, ending his ten‑season spell with Athletic Bilbao after 275 official appearances for the Los Rojiblancos. The transfer was confirmed by the Andalusian side on Thursday as part of coach Edin Terzic’s squad overhaul.
Vesga was among several players discarded by Edin Terzic, making his departure a formality in the coach’s extensive squad overhaul. The veteran’s exit therefore aligns with the manager’s plan to reshape the roster.
Earlier speculation linked the midfielder with a move to Mallorca, but Almería overtook the island club to secure his signature. The Andalusian side completed the transfer after the island side was overtaken in the race.
Vesga did not report to Athletic’s Lezama training ground on Thursday, opting instead to work alone on the facility’s pitches. His prolonged solo spell underscored the finality of his departure.
Mundo Deportivo’s Iñaki Ugalde said, “the midfielder’s farewell to Athletic now awaits only the official announcement.” The statement indicated that the transfer will be formalised soon.
During his decade with the Los Rojiblancos, Vesga amassed 275 official appearances, a testament to his durability. His record makes him one of the most capped Rojiblanco players of recent years.
Almería add a midfielder with extensive experience in a demanding squad culture, bolstering the club’s midfield options for the upcoming season. The signing completes a transfer that had first seemed destined for Mallorca before shifting to the Andalusian side.
The move will be formalised once the clubs issue the official announcement, sealing the end of Vesga’s ten‑season career with the Rojiblancos. This concludes a long association between the player and Athletic Bilbao.
