Arsenal’s chase of Vinicius Jr may be the biggest red herring

Arsenal have been cautioned not to get carried away as they pursue Brazil superstar Vinicius Jr, also known as Vinicius Junior, the 26‑year‑old winger linked with a move to North London while his future at Real Madrid remains uncertain. Sources say if he declines an extension, Real Madrid will look to sell him for an “incredible amount”. Transfermarkt values him at almost £120 million, and South American expert Jon Cotterill suggests Arsenal would need to pay over £100 million.

Arsenal have only previously spent a six‑figure sum of this magnitude on Declan Rice, who arrived from West Ham for £105 million three years ago. This indicates the Gunners would be stretching their historic transfer budget to secure Vinicius.

Liverpool were offered the chance to sign the Brazilian earlier this summer but chose not to pursue the move. Consequently, Arsenal appear to be the sole Premier League club positioned to acquire his services should he reject a new Madrid contract.

TalkSPORT’s Rory Jennings called a Vinicius signing “the biggest signing in Premier League history” if it materialises, while Transfer Insiders’ Rickie Haywood‑Williams warned it could be “the biggest red herring in history” and a bargaining tool for the player.

If Vinicius decides against extending his Madrid contract, Arsenal are reportedly ready to strike personal terms with the 26‑year‑old. Yet the uncertainty surrounding his deal and Real Madrid’s likely demand for a hefty fee remain significant obstacles to completing the transfer.
