UEFA's cultural overhaul challenge confronts FIFA chief Infantino

FIFA announced early on Saturday that it was dropping the controversial investor plan after massive resistance grew over the previous days. The move came after Infantino had set a deadline of 19 September for member associations to approve the sale of competition shares.

The original proposal, unveiled on Tuesday 28 July 2026, called for the creation of a company called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) to bundle all commercial activities and tournament organisation. Through FFE, FIFA intended to sell investor stakes to raise many billions of euros.

UEFA’s follow‑up called for accountability, insisting that responsible parties be named and held to account for secret projects pushed in emergency procedures by anonymous actors. It warned that such opaque deals cannot continue.

Infantino scraps FIFA Forward Enterprise amid confederation backlash

The statement also reminded that Infantino had broken two of his 2015 election promises: the pledge for transparency and the commitment to use FIFA reserves – over five billion dollars – for the development of football worldwide.

Close staff members, FIFA operations director Kevin Lamour and senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro, have turned away from Infantino, and UEFA said the current FIFA leadership has lost the trust of the president and many other presidents in the international football family.

UEFA announced a boycott of all FIFA tournaments if the investor deal is pushed forward, declaring: "No national teams from UEFA will participate in any FIFA competition as long as these proposals remain." The stance was backed by CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation.
