Why the USA look transformed for Belgium clash in Seattle

🇧🇪

On a crisp Monday in Seattle, Belgium will meet the United States in the World Cup round of 16, a rematch of the 5‑2 defeat the Americans handed the Red Devils in March in Atlanta. The USA side arrives with a revamped lineup, including a new right winger, a restored midfield anchor and a different goalkeeper.

In the March encounter in Atlanta, the United States defeated Belgium 5‑2, with the American forwards Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun spearheading the attack. The loss left the Red Devils unable to match the Lions of Teranga for most of the 80‑minute contest.

Since that defeat, the USA have overhauled their right flank: Sergio Dest, sidelined by injury, has been replaced by 21‑year‑old Alex Freeman as right winger. Freeman has already recorded a goal and an assist in the current tournament, establishing himself as a key pillar of the side.

Midfield balance also improves with the return of Tyler Adams, the Bournemouth midfielder valued at €35 million, who now occupies the number‑6 role. His presence, together with the tactical adjustments of coach Mauricio Pochettino, complements the shift of Weston McKennie from wing to a more central midfield position, altering the American dynamics.

Goalkeeping sees a change as veteran Matt Turner is dropped in favour of Matt Freese, the New York City keeper who now starts between the posts. The new goalkeeper brings fresh energy to the defensive line.

"Now we know the starting eleven before the match," journalist Michael Adubato told us when asked what has driven the United States' progress since March. Adubato, who analysed the March USA‑Belgium tie for Yanks Abroad, highlighted the settled lineup as a decisive factor.

Christian Pulisic, the AC Milan winger, continues to perform at a high level, earning the nickname "the American Jeremy Doku" for his flair. He was instrumental in the United States' victories over Paraguay and Bosnia‑Herzegovina before sustaining an injury.

Folarin Balogun, the AS Monaco striker who contributed three goals and an assist in the tournament, will miss Monday's game after receiving a red card and suspension. His absence is described as a major loss for the American side.

Beyond tactics, the enthusiasm of the American crowd adds a distinct edge, as one local remarked that even the curling team would capture the nation's attention. The United States, a nation of sport and patriotism, offers unwavering support to its soccer team regardless of political affiliation.
