AZ Alkmaar eyes Danish breakout as fee impasse stalls van Bergen

🇳🇱

AZ Alkmaar are weighing a switch to Danish midfielder Valdemar Byskov after fee talks over FC Groningen target Thom van Bergen have stalled, the Eredivisie club reported that the 21‑year‑old has logged nine goals and five assists in 49 appearances for FC Midtjylland.

Thom van Bergen has expressed a strong desire to move to AZ Alkmaar, but the two clubs have been unable to agree on a transfer fee. The impasse has prompted the Dutch side to explore alternatives.

Valdemar Byskov, 21, is the alternative under consideration. He recorded four goals and two assists in 34 matches during the 2024/2025 campaign.

Byskov's four‑year spell at FC Midtjylland also included a brief loan to Portuguese side Mafra in the 2023/2024 season. Across his time at Midtjylland he amassed nine goals and five assists in 49 appearances.

Internationally, the Danish midfielder has represented his country at every youth level from U17 through to U21. These caps underline his development trajectory.

No agreement has been reached between AZ Alkmaar and FC Midtjylland, but talks involving the clubs and the player are reported to be ongoing.
