Rijeka’s early strike shatters Derry’s European dream at Brandywell

Daniel Adu‑Adjei’s 14th‑minute strike proved the decisive moment as Rijeka secured a 1‑0 win at Brandywell, ending Derry City’s European campaign. The lacklustre display saw the Candystripes concede early, leaving their hopes of progressing in the UEFA Conference League shattered.

The Candystripes dominated the opening exchanges, buoyed by a rapturous home crowd. Their early pressure set the tone for the match at Brandywell. Yet the dominance did not translate into a breakthrough before the decisive goal.

Michael Duffy and Ellis Chapman combined early to create a chance for Liam Boyce, whose 10‑yard effort was saved by the outstretched Aleksa Todorovic. The missed opportunity underscored Derry’s early pressure but failed to break the deadlock. The home side continued to press, seeking a lead.

Daniel Adu‑Adjei latched onto a poor back‑pass from Cameron Dummigan and raced clear to finish superbly beyond Brian Maher, doubling the Croatian advantage after just 14 minutes. The strike raised Rijeka’s aggregate lead to 2‑0 and effectively knocked the stuffing out of Tiernan Lynch’s side. The Croatian visitors then settled into control of the ball and tempo.

In the second half Derry City searched for a comeback, but the opportunity never materialised. Adu‑Adjei shot wide before heading off‑target from point‑blank range, and Michael Duffy’s free‑kick attempt also went unanswered. The Candystripes were left unable to respond.

Rijeka’s victory secures their place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League, where they will face Ilves of Finland. Toni Fruk, fresh from representing Croatia at the World Cup, displayed glimpses of class as the Croatian side prepared for the next challenge. The result ends Tiernan Lynch’s side’s involvement in Europe, and Derry City return to league action on Sunday, 2 August with a trip to Dublin to take on St Patrick’s Athletic.
