City’s long‑term gamble on Foden ahead of Asian tour to silence critics

Phil Foden has signed a contract extension with Manchester City that runs until the summer of 2030, finalising the deal ahead of the club’s preseason tour of Asia. The England international says the new deal gives him the platform to silence critics and become the player he knows he can be.

In an interview with Simon Bajkowski for The Manchester Evening News, Foden said, “It was like a season of two halves for me. I think the first half of it was really good. I performed quite well and in the second half I couldn’t really get going and then get a lot of game time.” He added, “You’ve got to take it with a pinch of salt and then just try and react and prove people wrong and that’s all you can do really. A fresh start now and hopefully that doesn’t happen again.”

Enzo Maresca’s side will aim to help Foden turn the corner, with the contract extension signalling the club’s belief in his potential. Even as Pep Guardiola’s final season as manager saw him lose his place, City’s hierarchy insist they will not give up on the England international.
