€14m fee and four-year pact: Ajax lands Caio Henrique
Ajax have completed the signing of 28‑year‑old left‑back Caio Henrique, securing him on a four‑year contract after paying a €10 million transfer fee plus €4 million in bonuses to AS Monaco, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. The deal, finalised on Tuesday, makes him the first summer addition for technical director Jordi Cruijff’s first‑team squad.
The Dutch side secured Henrique after talks with technical director Jordi Cruijff and head coach Míchel, who presented the project in Amsterdam. Henrique becomes the first summer acquisition for Cruijff’s first‑team plans, adding depth to a back‑line that currently relies on Owen Wijndal and Lucas Rosa at left‑back.
Negotiations stretched over several weeks, with Ajax agreeing to a total outlay of €14 million – €10 million upfront and €4 million in performance bonuses – to AS Monaco. Media reports had earlier suggested a definitive agreement, but Fabrizio Romano confirmed that all signatures are now in place, even though the clubs have yet to issue a joint statement. Monaco had also expressed a desire to retain Henrique, making the agreement notable.
Henrique spent the previous six seasons at AS Monaco, the club that signed him from Atlético Madrid. During his Monaco tenure he recorded 41 assists across 211 appearances, establishing himself as an attacking wing‑back before a torn ACL limited his involvement in the 2023/24 campaign.
Ajax’s season begins in less than four weeks with a Conference League qualifying match, marking Henrique’s first competitive appearance for the club. Coach Míchel will have to decide whether Henrique can immediately challenge the incumbent left‑backs, Wijndal and Rosa, for a starting role.
Reports indicated that clubs from England, Italy and Brazil also monitored Henrique before he chose Ajax, highlighting the competition for his signature. His decision underscores Ajax’s continued ability to attract talent despite interest from other European and South American markets.
