Zidane faces the dilemma of Thauvin's return at 33

On the pitch at the Bollaert stadium, Florian Thauvin, 33, scored the decisive goal and provided an assist in RC Lens' 2-1 victory over Paris FC, reiterating his ambition to get back into the Blues, but his age and the competition for his position make it difficult to convince Zinédine Zidane.

Impressive statistics for Thauvin

Since joining RC Lens, the Lens player has amassed six goals and eight assists across all competitions. These numbers place him among the most influential players in the squad. His contribution was decisive in the 2-1 success against Paris FC.

At 33, the 2018 World Cup champion still displays refined technique, sharp game vision and lethal efficiency in the final thirty metres. These attributes make him a key component of RC Lens' offensive system.

Debate over Thauvin's recall

Ligue 1+ analyst Clément Grenier believes the Lens player deserves another chance with the Blues. “Considering his performances and the absentees from the upcoming squad, I think he deserves to get back into that blue shirt,” he said.

He nevertheless notes that Thauvin's age weighs on the coach's considerations. “Surely at 33 he does not represent the future of the French team,” Grenier emphasized.

The right‑wing position is occupied by Michael Olise, Maghnes Akliouche and Rayan Cherki, all possessing similar technical qualities. Grenier clarified: “The only problem is that there is Olise, who plays on the right and cuts inside on his left foot, Akliouche as well, Cherki even though he is more of a number 10.” This abundance of talent complicates Thauvin's selection.

Even the possible absence of Ousmane Dembélé and Estéban Lepaul does not guarantee a place for the Lens player. Grenier reminded that “Thauvin is not a true centre‑forward to compensate for the absences of Dembélé and Lepaul.” The coach could therefore favour a different profile.

For Florian Thauvin, the equation is clear: his performances with RC Lens work in his favour, but he must convince Zinédine Zidane that he can provide an immediate added value. Every new match with the Sang et Or represents another opportunity to tip the balance in his favour, while the coach must choose between current form and building a sustainable project.
