Völler backs Nagelsmann after Germany’s early World Cup exit
After Germany’s shock elimination by Paraguay at the World Cup, sporting director Rudi Völler publicly defended head coach Julian Nagelsmann. He insisted the disappointment does not warrant an immediate dismissal and that the DFB should give the coach more time to recover.
Speaking to Magenta TV, Völler said, “First of all, the disappointment is enormous. We expected more, and there was more in it for us, but unfortunately we’ve been knocked out.” The statement underscored the magnitude of the loss.
He added that the result was not down to the squad’s attitude, noting, “We have great team spirit, a great mentality. The team gave everything again today.” This highlighted his view that the players performed admirably despite the defeat.

Völler emphasized his personal relationship with Nagelsmann, saying, “You all know what kind of relationship I have with Julian Nagelsmann. It’s always written that I try to protect him or act as his bodyguard. He doesn’t need that at all, because he is still an absolute top coach.” He argued that such support should continue even when results falter. He cautioned that the job is not guaranteed, stating, “I’m still convinced that he is probably the right man to carry on. But I’m not the DFB on my own. I’m not the only one who gets to decide that.” Völler said the federation will meet in the next day or two to discuss Nagelsmann’s future, noting the coach’s resilience after the bitter defeat.Nagelsmann refuses to quit after Paraguay exit, eyes Euro 2028
