Nagelsmann refuses to quit after Paraguay exit, eyes Euro 2028
In Boston’s bustling TD Garden, Germany’s loss to Paraguay in the World Cup round of 32 saw manager Julian Nagelsmann, 38, publicly rule out resignation, insisting he will stay on to guide Die Mannschaft into Euro 2028 if the DFB wishes.
Germany’s group‑stage performance was unconvincing, yet the team topped Group E despite a loss to Ecuador in the final match. Heading into the round‑of‑32 clash in Boston, they entered as heavy favourites against Paraguay.
Paraguay took the lead in the first half through Julio Enciso’s strike. Kai Havertz levelled for Germany with a header in regular time, but an extra‑time goal was ruled out after a VAR review.

The tie proceeded to a penalty shoot‑out. Havertz missed the first spot‑kick, and subsequent attempts by Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah also failed, while José Canale converted the decisive penalty for Paraguay. The defeat marked another low point for the German side, which has not won a World Cup knockout match since the 2014 final. It also ended the nation’s run of advancing beyond the group stage for the first time since then.Penalty drama reshapes World Cup path for Paraguay and Germany
Nagelsmann reiterated that he will not resign, telling German broadcaster ZDF: “I am available if the DFB wants that.” “If the DFB doesn’t want that, they have to tell me. I’m not the type to run away, that’s out of the question.” “If the DFB wants it, then I will prepare for the European Championship and the Nations League,” he added. His current contract runs until 2028, the year the European Championship will be staged in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Paraguay’s next challenge will be a last‑16 match against either France or Sweden in Philadelphia on Saturday, 4 July.
