United eye Nagelsmann and Howe amid Carrick woes

Manchester United are less than three months into a new Premier League season but already the details of head coach Michael Carrick's contract are under the microscope, with his two‑year deal signed in May believed to contain a break clause.
Man United were appointed on a permanent basis in May after a second interim spell that steered the club to third place in the Premier League and secured Champions League qualification, ending a season that lasted just 40 matches.
Early season woes and fan backlash
The former midfielder’s tenure has quickly turned sour. United have won only two of their first 12 matches across all competitions, and a 4‑1 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday intensified criticism. Technical director Jason Wilcox and part‑owner Jim Ratcliffe are expected to remain in their posts longer than the head coach they appointed.
Bruno Fernandes openly questioned Carrick’s tactics after the Bournemouth loss, while Lisandro Martinez earlier criticised Wilcox. Pundit Gary Neville joined the chorus, condemning both players for airing internal disputes and highlighting United’s recruitment failures.

Potential successors and contract safety net
reporter Alex Crook says United were prepared for the two‑year deal to end prematurely, noting that the contract is believed to include a break clause.
“Carrick only signed a two‑year contract with United in the summer after piloting them to Champions League qualification but that deal is believed to include a break clause,” Crook reported.
United have already begun scouting replacements following the 4‑1 Champions League loss at Como. Candidates include former Germany and Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, whose case is being pushed by head of recruitment Christopher Vivell, and ex‑Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, favoured by Wilcox.
“Nagelsmann's case is being pushed by United head of recruitment Christopher Vivell while technical director Jason Wilcox favours a manager with Premier League experience like Howe,” Crook added.
Wilcox’s admiration for Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is bound to be fruitless on this occasion, while Crook also credits the former Blackburn Rovers winger with a liking for Brighton & Hove Albion boss Fabian Hurzeler.
Why Man Utd fans turn their anger on Wilcox after Bournemouth loss
If a break clause is triggered, United could avoid a prolonged period of instability, a rare example of forward‑looking contract design in a club notorious for hasty managerial changes. The situation underscores the broader market trend of clubs embedding exit mechanisms to protect against early‑season collapses.
