Manchester United's future hinges on Carrick as Monday talks begin

Forty years of poor starts loomed over Man Utd as Michael Carrick travelled to Carrington on Monday afternoon, his future as head coach hanging by a thread after the club recorded its worst opening season record in that span so far.

Sports Brand Writer Samuel Meade reported for Sport that the United boss drove into Carrington on Monday afternoon, and the club said talks would take place over the coming hours. Carrick’s arrival underscored the uncertainty surrounding his role.

Recent results deepen crisis

Even before Sunday’s loss at Bournemouth, Carrick had overseen United’s worst start to a season in 40 years. The Cherries then outclassed the side with a 3‑0 victory at Old Trafford, deepening the crisis.

The same week saw United beaten 4‑1 in Como, prompting Bruno Fernandes to criticise Carrick’s tactics. At full‑time on Sunday the manager walked a lap of the pitch, a gesture many interpreted as a farewell.

Home fans sang Carrick’s name throughout the match, but turned on the players as they were jeered off the field. The mixed reaction highlighted the growing divide between supporters and the squad.

Decision looming at the top

Carrick, only 12 games into the new season, said he would accept whatever was best for the club, adding, “I love what I do, I love the position I’m in and I feel the responsibility.” United currently sit 16th in the league.

Chiefs Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, together with co‑owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will decide Carrick’s fate on Monday, with the possibility of an axe being swung. Their decision comes after intense fan anger and media scrutiny.

former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, who left Germany this summer, are the two frontrunners for the vacancy. Both have been linked to the role in recent weeks.

Gary Neville warned after the Bournemouth defeat that a dismissal was likely, saying a decision “will probably disgust Manchester United fans but it is probably necessary.” Since Ratcliffe’s arrival, he has already dismissed Erik ten Hag and removed Ruben Amorim after just over a year, putting his decision‑making under the spotlight.
