Tielemans' £35m United move: a gamble or a game‑changer?

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·
[Getty Images] The initial reaction in Manchester United circles to the news of Youri Tielemans' impending arrival was positive, according to a [Getty Images] report. Tielemans, a former teammate of current first‑team coach Jonny Evans, is celebrated for scoring Leicester City's winner in the 2021 FA Cup final and for Aston Villa in their Europa League triumph over Freiburg in May. Former midfielder Nicky Butt praised the £35 million fee, calling it a phenomenal signing while discussing the Belgian's impact with ex‑United teammate Paul Scholes on The Good, The Bad And The Football podcast. Butt added that United need “a rocket on” and must build a squad, not just a starting XI, to compete on all four fronts. An erroneous X post claimed Tielemans had already played more minutes at age 29 than Paul Scholes did in his career, a claim later debunked but which highlighted Tielemans’ extensive playing time. Tielemans made his senior debut for Anderlecht at 16 years and 82 days and has now accumulated 668 games for club and country, over 100 more than Casemiro had when he moved from Real Madrid to United in 2022. Casemiro, then 30, enjoyed an excellent debut season before a dip in form led to 18 months of criticism about his career trajectory. Observers argue Tielemans is better suited to the physical demands of the Premier League, having played in England since joining Leicester from Monaco in 2019. Last season, calf and ankle problems limited his appearances for Aston Villa to 35, the fewest in his English career. At the World Cup, Tielemans scored an 89th‑minute equaliser against Senegal and later converted an extra‑time penalty winner before a warm‑up injury ruled him out of the quarter‑final against Spain. The injury occurred in the warm‑up before the quarter‑final, ending his tournament prematurely. Despite the setback, United’s recruitment team is expected to integrate Tielemans into a squad that will contest the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League and other competitions. Fans will watch how his experience across 668 matches translates into United’s midfield dynamics under Evans. The club’s next steps will be revealed during pre‑season training, where Tielemans is set to join his new teammates.
