Andoni Iraola could save Liverpool millions by trusting Elliott

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Andoni Iraola stepped onto the Anfield media platform for the first time as Liverpool’s manager on Monday 13 July, the Spaniard fielding a barrage of questions from reporters while outlining his vision for the club’s summer rebuild. He hinted at strategic moves and highlighted the importance of squad continuity.

The Spaniard faced many questions from journalists and gave a brief insight into how he sees things going for Liverpool this summer. His answers suggested a focus on retaining talent rather than wholesale spending.

The Reds' pre‑season is expected to start on 20 July, with a decent chunk of their players anticipated to be available for the early games. This timetable gives Iraola a short window to shape his plans before the competitive season begins.

Changes have already taken place at Anfield, with Iraola being one of the main driving forces behind Victor Munoz's Anfield switch this summer. The move signals the new manager’s willingness to act decisively in the transfer market.

Iraola could save Liverpool millions by doing just one thing: trusting Harvey Elliott to stay rather than letting him leave. During Arne Slot's first season, the Englishman saw limited minutes, prompting a loan to Aston Villa with an obligation to buy after ten appearances for the Villans. Unai Emery later chose not to sign him permanently, allowing only nine games, which saw Elliott return to Liverpool.

The 23‑year‑old Elliott is versatile, having mostly played as a central midfielder for Jurgen Klopp but also featuring as a right‑winger. The Reds need a right‑wing solution this summer, and Elliott could provide a cost‑effective answer.

In the current transfer market, a natural right‑winger is like gold dust. Liverpool pursued Yan Diomande and Antoine Semenyo, both linked to a move to L4, but neither completed the switch. With Salah now gone, the club faces a huge void on the right, though Federico Chiesa and Jeremie Frimpong could be options.
