Tenerife mourns as Jesus de Miguel collapses in fatal clash

CD Tenerife confirmed on Tuesday that 30‑year‑old striker Jesus de Miguel died after collapsing from cardiac arrest following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during their league match.

The forward collapsed after being struck in the chest by Owono in the closing stages of Monday’s match at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The incident occurred seven minutes into stoppage time when Owono rushed out of his penalty area to intercept a long ball near the halfway line. As the two challenged for possession, the goalkeeper’s raised knee hit de Miguel in the chest, sending him to the ground.

De Miguel remained motionless while players from both sides called for medical assistance. Medical personnel treated him for more than five minutes before he was carried off and taken to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria by ambulance. He suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest during the journey and was resuscitated by emergency staff before being admitted to the intensive‑care unit.

The club initially reported that he was in a stable condition despite the seriousness of his injuries, but his condition deteriorated overnight. Tenerife subsequently confirmed his death at 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday, 3 November.

Club statement and disciplinary action

“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing of Jesus de Miguel Alameda,” the club said, adding there were “no words of comfort”. The club extended condolences to his family, friends, teammates and supporters, noting the family’s request for privacy and respect.

Monday’s match was halted after the incident, with Owono shown a straight red card for the challenge. Players from both sides were visibly distressed, and several of de Miguel’s Tenerife teammates broke down in tears as medical staff worked.

Wider football community response and player background

The Spanish Football Federation earlier expressed its support for the striker and the Tenerife family, joining several Spanish clubs in sending messages of encouragement as news of his hospitalisation emerged. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of condolences across Spanish football, focusing on de Miguel’s family and teammates who witnessed the incident.

Born in Madrid on 21 September 1996, de Miguel built his career through Spain’s lower divisions before establishing himself as a prolific forward. He began his senior career with Leganés B in 2015 and later played for Internacional de Madrid, Fuenlabrada, Unión Adarve, Navalcarnero and Unionistas de Salamanca. His breakthrough came after joining CD Castellón in January 2023, and he finished the 2023‑24 promotion campaign as the leading scorer in his group with 16 goals.

The report was published in ISTANBUL on 3 November 2026 at 11:49 am GMT+3 and appeared under the Politics, War, Terror and News sections.
