St Mirren lock down midfield prospect McEvoy with long‑term deal

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

St Mirren have moved swiftly to secure 19‑year‑old midfielder Carrick McEvoy after his full‑match debut in a 4‑0 League Cup win over Dumbarton, a step manager Craig McLeish said was vital for the club’s midfield future, and the youngster has now signed a contract running to summer 2028.

Craig McLeish praised the teenager’s weekend display, describing him as a talented boy who could become a big part of the club. The manager’s comments underscored the importance of McEvoy’s composure on a big stage.

McEvoy featured for the full 90 minutes as St Mirren thrashed Dumbarton 4‑0 in their League Cup group opener, showcasing his stamina and composure. The performance highlighted the midfielder’s readiness to compete at senior level.

Following the display, the 19‑year‑old signed a new contract that runs until the summer of 2028, with St Mirren retaining an option to extend for an additional year. The deal formalises the club’s commitment to his development.

“It’s something that has been planned for a little while now based on how Carrick has been in pre‑season and meeting the targets that we set for him coming back in,” McLeish explained. He added, “I’ve known Carrick since he was nine, working with him through the academy.”

McLeish recalled that Carrick captained the under‑19 side and was a key player for the club’s youth set‑up. He said the youngster’s long‑standing relationship with the coaching staff makes him a natural fit for future first‑team plans.

Looking ahead, McLeash stressed that McEvoy’s league minutes will depend on his work ethic and performance levels. The manager indicated that consistent effort could see the midfielder feature regularly in St Mirren’s league campaign.
