Six-week conditional suspension for Southampton coach Tonda Eckert
The German manager Tonda Eckert, coach of the English Championship‑club Southampton, has received a six‑week conditional suspension because of his role in the Spygate scandal at the end of last season. In addition, he must pay a fine of €33,000 (about £28,000).
Sanction for Eckert
Eckert, 33 years old, was charged in July and subsequently pleaded guilty. The English Football League (EFL) imposed the conditional suspension and the monetary fine.
The scandal revolves around the covert observation of a training session of Middlesbrough, the semi‑final opponent, within the permitted 72‑hour window before a match, which is prohibited by the rules.
Consequences for Southampton
Southampton was qualified for the play‑off final against Hull City, but was disqualified when the breach came to light; the EFL appointed Middlesbrough as a replacement in the final. An appeal by the club against the decision remained unsuccessful.

The club had previously also spied on Ipswich Town and Oxford United, causing the Saints to receive a four‑point penalty at the start of the season.
Despite the sanctions, Eckert remains employed by Southampton and continues to oversee the daily training.
