Julian Ward faces crucial choice as Liverpool weigh Van Dijk's future
Sporting director Julian Ward is poised to make a decisive call on centre‑back Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool confront a wave of contract expiries in June, with numerous first‑team members set to leave.
Contract cliff threatens squad stability
All of Liverpool's first‑team contracts run out in June, meaning a large portion of the squad will be free agents unless new deals are struck. The club must therefore address both the impending exits and existing weaknesses in left‑back, central midfield and right‑wing positions before it can mount a genuine title challenge.
Van Dijk’s importance under scrutiny
At 35, the Dutch defender remains a pivotal figure, having taken over the leadership mantle after Jordan Henderson’s departure. He has featured for the full 90 minutes in each of Liverpool's five Premier League matches this season and in their Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.
Manager Andoni Iraola has described Van Dijk as “crucial” to his plans and says there are no immediate concerns despite the contract ending next summer.
Ward’s pending decision
Sources told Football Insider that Liverpool are prepared to extend Van Dijk’s deal if he maintains his current form. The defender has expressed a desire to continue representing the Netherlands through Euro 2028, suggesting he aims to play at the highest level for several more years.
Ward’s upcoming decision is seen as “great news” for the club, offering a potential solution to the looming squad overhaul. While other options may emerge, the club currently lacks a clear replacement for Van Dijk at Anfield.
Should Ward opt against a new contract, the club will eventually need to consider successors such as Giovanni Leoni, but the immediate priority remains securing the “incredible” defender’s services.
