Shea Lacey sparks Manchester United's comeback against Roma

Shea Lacey, the young right‑back of the Red Devils, came on in the 75th minute against Roma in the Champions League, providing Matheus Cunha with the decisive assist that sealed the 3‑2 victory. The English side, which spent over £176 million in the summer, thus turned around a result that seemed frozen.

For Roma, the match was the second comeback they suffered in the Champions League, aided by a mistake from Leonardo Balerdi, who until then had been among the season’s best. The result seemed frozen, but Balerdi’s mistake allowed the Red Devils to overturn the score.

A match with a thousand paradoxes

A match with a thousand paradoxes saw the youngster shine. The game displayed unexpected battles and a thrilling finish.

Lacey’s decisive role

LACEY came on in the 75th minute for Amad Diallo, with the score 2‑1 in favour of the Giallorossi. His dynamism increased the pressure on the right flank, diminishing Wesley’s sharpness.

A minute after his entry, the former Flamengo player executed a quick footwork move and delivered a pass inside the area, judged legal by the referee despite United’s protests. In the 85th minute, evading Wesley’s marking, he launched a through ball to a running Matheus Cunha, whose shot sealed the final 3‑2 for the home side.

Before that match, Lacey had only five appearances and a total of 110 minutes across all competitions. Those few appearances were spread between the league, the League Cup and Europe.

In the league, the 19‑year‑old made his debut in a 2‑0 defeat to Hull City on 22 August, then remained out for the next six games, shuttling between the bench and missed call‑ups. On 25 October, against Bournemouth, he got another chance, after two fleeting appearances in the Champions League with Sabah and Como.

In the League Cup he scored, but the goal was not enough to beat Brighton and avoid early elimination. Despite the goal, Brighton prevailed, knocking United out of the competition.

United’s return to the table

The win ended a run of European setbacks for United, who had not won since 10 September. Michael Carrick said at a press conference: “We love him, he’s a fantastic lad, he has great talent and is eager to do well. He’s got that sparkle in his eyes, he plays with a touch of mischief. He gave everyone a lift when he came on and made the most of his potential.”

Manchester United, having risen to six points, have rekindled hopes of qualification for the next round thanks also to Lacey’s contribution. The manager hopes to continue on this trajectory in the upcoming fixtures.
