United end winless run with 3-2 Roma comeback

Manchester United celebrated a 3-2 victory over AS Roma in the Champions League after seven weeks without a win. The match was a comeback, after United fell behind 0-2 after 17 minutes. The early goals from Matias Soulé (11') and Donyell Malen (17') had created the deficit. Despite a goalless first half, United found their way back, aided by a penalty after a collision between Gianluca Mancini and Matheus Cunha. Bruno Fernandes missed the first penalty, but was given a retake because Roma defenders entered the penalty area too early. His second attempt was also saved, but Matheus Cunha scored the equaliser in the 58th minute. Cunha capped the game with further strikes in the 83rd and 86th minute, although he had to be sent off in stoppage time after receiving a yellow‑red card. The win ended a run of nine games without success and was the first since September 10. Captain Bruno Fernandes said that many lies had been spread and stressed that the team was not playing for a job‑saving plan. He added that players, the club and fans had desperately needed the win. Whether the result eases the pressure on team manager Michael Carrick will become clear in the coming days.

Roma's historic miracle against Barcelona

A Sky reporter had said in 2018 during Roma's spectacular comeback against FC Barcelona, “Roma has risen from its ruins!” Back then, Roma turned a 1-4 deficit from the first leg into a 3-0 victory in the second leg against the Catalans. On Tuesday evening Roma witnessed again the resurrection of a team declared dead, this time however as the loser against United. The match was featured on 04.11.2026 in the programme of sportschau.de.
